The Ship Be Sinking

Steroids & MMA

An excerpt from the most recent Wrestling Observer Newsletter by Dave Meltzer:

“…a few months back when talking to someone in one of the major camps who because of his role of being a connection had a pretty good idea of who was and wasn’t on PED’s, we went through the name guys in that camp and it ended up right at 50%. Basically the crutch that some guys use that “everyone is doing it” is exaggerated, but people who don’t believe they are extremely prominent and that the current testing methods means we have a clean sport are incredibly naive.”

To be honest I’m somewhat surprised the number is that low, but given how hard it is to find reasonably accurate data this seems like as close to a real evidence-based number as we’re likely to get. It should also be a standing rejoinder to the silly argument people trot out that if someone hasn’t tested positive, they couldn’t possibly be on something; the reality of PEDs and testing these days is that for people who know what they’re doing, it’s just not that hard to tailor a usage program to avoid detection. Acknowledging that reality is a basic requirement for having a grown up discussion about what- if anything- should be done about PED use in the sport.
