The Ship Be Sinking

Mouth Almighty

For a variety of reasons I’m not going to post in-depth thoughts on UFC 115 at the moment, but I will say this: that was the first time I was actually embarrassed to have paid for a UFC. It was one of the worst PPVs I have ever purchased, and I bought the Don King show featuring John Ruiz vs. Hasim Rahman back when.

  1. Your kidding right? It was a great PPV

  2. I’m probably being harsh, but there were just some of those moments which drive me insane- particularly Pat Barry not really trying to win against CroCop and then hugging him in the middle of the fight, Yves Lavign having another colossal refereeing brainfart, Chuck storming off in a way which would get, say, Forrest Griffin criticized for months on end, Chuck’s fans immediately campaigning on various blogs for him to keep fighting, everything about the Yvel/Rothwell Toughman vs. Bumfights throwdown….

I really enjoyed MacDonald vs. Condit and Martin Kampmann’s performance. That was about it.

  3. Dude, you’re crazy. That was a great card. The UFC has had so many duds recently, this was the first time that I was entertained for most of the three hours.

Feel free to read my review of the fight to get my opinions, but I disagree greatly with your points: I think Barry was trying to win, he just wasn’t in great shape. But give the kid credit for fighting his balls off in the first round. He just blew his load early. But you can’t kill the guy for the loss.

You’re absolutely right about Levigne, but you can’t let that ruin a whole card of quality fights.

I don’t get the Liddell criticism. He’s an old man you just got brutally KO’d and took several follow-up shots. Isn’t it a tad bit more important to get the guy in front of a doctor than a post-fight interview with Rogan? Just because people did it with Forrest, doesn’t make it right.

And Yvel-Rothwell, while not great, had its moments are there were clearly skilled moments.

As for bloggers, just ignore them…except for mine, of course!

  4. Barry tried to carry CroCop early because that was his idol. He knocked him down twice and shattered his face, refused to follow up, and then helped CroCop to his feet and hugged him. Then he ended up breaking his foot and his hand before he realized that this wasn’t sparring and Mirko was actually trying to kill him, and once he did he couldn’t turn it on with the injuries. It wasn’t a conditioning thing; he disrespected CroCop by thinking he was so much better than him that he could finish him at any time, and held off out of a desire not to embarrass his hero. That’s just not an honest effort to win, which to me is the one thing fans have a right to demand from professional fighters. All Barry achieved was to humiliate both himself and CroCop- more himself. And that was the #2 match on the card.

As for Liddell… honestly, that’s a discussion we should have in person at some point. The short version from my end is that I hate the way he disrespects his opponents by dismissing their wins as flukes, and I think in doing so he’s contributing to future tragedies.
