The Ship Be Sinking

Bad Bluff

Dear NJ Nets: stop telling us that John Wall and Devin Harris could play together. Devin Harris, especially in his current defense-optional mode, derives almost the whole of his value from being a ball-dominant dribble-driver who draws copious fouls. He’s not a spot-up shooter (.262 3PT%), he’s not a lockdown defender anymore really especially against larger wings- how is he going to provide value on either end playing alongside another player whose best attributes are the same as his? There’s only one rock, and if one of them is handling it than the other is standing there watching him. I recognize that there’s only a 25% chance of this being an issue and even if it becomes one the team has to do what they can to preserve Harris’s trade value, but still- I can’t believe anyone is really going to buy this bluff. At most Harris will be kept around for a year to teach Wall the ropes in the event that the Nets get the first pick overall, but in that instance I’d rather see Harris moved for players who can provide a boost in (ANY) other areas and a competent veteran backup for Wall brought in.
