Fight of the Year Contender

Jeeeeeeeeeeeeesus Christ was WEC great tonight. Henderson/Cerrone was an awesome back and forth battle which either guy could have taken (I had the judges’ card, but the first round was razor-thin either way), several of the other fights were excellent, the Waggney Fabiano loss is a contender for upset of the year given how and how quickly it transpired, and the best moment of the night wasn’t even any of those. The brief visual highlight of Urijah Faber trying to do an interview while standing between the play by play weasel and Frank Mir, and looking like an Oompa-Loompa in the process, made me laugh for about 10 minutes straight. Whoever permitted that to happen should immediately be fired and subsequently hired by Comedy Central or the Jay Leno show or someone else desperately in need of comedy help, because it was among the most counterproductive and yet memorable TV moments I’ve seen from WEC. As a result, with the exception of making their biggest draw look like a weeded-out midget, the show was a success in every way that a good MMA show is- great action, great upsets, great comedy, memorable characters and I came away from it knowing when the next show is, knowing who’s headlining, and wanting to see that fight as well as the next main event after that. A home run of a show.

On a side note, I’m sure everyone will pass the drug-testing and all, but someone needs to find out if Ben Henderson has replaced his bones with pipe cleaners or was born with an extra couple of arteries or something, because I have literally zero clue how he survived some of those submissions he was put in. If he was just retardedly tough and survived getting his shoulder shredded that would be one (amazing) thing, but he came out of those arm locks punching with the arm that was trapped, and he came through blood chokes which should have left him unconscious without even slowing down appreciably until the 4th round. Whatever the cause was, it really was a prodigious physical feat to have survived that.

  1. Even better than that fight was JuanMa v. Mtagwa. It was one of the best fights I’ve seen in a while.

  2. I read about it, and have been quietly kicking myself for not going ever since. Not my best call.
